Carlisle roofing systems utilised at ‘Fishbowl’ building

ALREADY recognized as one of Rotterdam’s most distinctive landmarks, the new collection building at Museum Boijmans van Beuningen is nicknamed ‘The Goldfish Bowl’.

Designed by MVRDV and built by BAM Bouw en Techniek, the building is shaped like a goldfish bowl with a mirrored facade made up of 1,664 panes of glass designed to reflect the surrounding built environment.

The project was built with building performance and sustainability in mind. The RESITRIX hybrid EPDM and bitumen roof system from Carlisle Construction Materials was used for the roof, and special tapes from Carlisle’s HERTALAN and ARBO ranges were used for the façade.

The building was constructed as a double-curved sphere of precast concrete elements, with each ‘ring’ made up of 64 panels. The radius of the building is 40 m at the base and 60 m at roof level. MVRDV selected Carlisle’s RESITRIX EPDM/bitumen roofing membrane as a ‘high performance, root resistant’ waterproofing system compatible with the vision of a green forest of 75 birch trees on the roof.

The site has a concrete roof terrace and the roof construction began with the installation of Carlisle bituminous vapor control layer on the concrete sub-base, followed by a layer of 10mm compression-resistant insulating mortar to create slopes towards the stormwater drains.

An SBS bitumen underlay was then applied, followed by Carlisle’s RESITRIX waterproofing system, which combines the flexibility and durability of EPDM on top with a layer of bitumen on the underside.

The cast concrete shell of the Fishbowl, insulated with rainproof insulation board, had to be made airtight and provide protection against the ingress of fire. All horizontal and vertical seams between the insulation panels were sealed with ARBO firestop tape from Carlisle’s range of curtain wall systems, which is certified as fire class B, S1 for smoke development and D0 for dripping.

Finally, the HERTALAN Easy Stick GS from Carlisle with glass fiber reinforcement and a self-adhesive butyl underlay was used to seal all facade details. This self-adhesive EPDM strip has a µ value of 170,000, which the company says makes it nearly airtight and watertight.
