The Better Business Bureau of North Alabama is issuing an alert to homeowners who may have suffered damage from this week’s storms.

Unlike the Twister movie, storm chasers go to the hardest hit areas and try to sell roofing and other contractor services, but many of them are scammers.

“People coming out and claiming they can fix roof damage or other damage that may have come with the storm,” said Elizabeth Garcia, president and CEO of the Better Business Bureau of North Alabama.

Garcia said there are red flags to look out for when these companies emerge.

These include the companies being based out of state, driving unmarked vehicles, knocking on the door for deals and not having liability insurance.

“Be very skeptical,” Garcia said. “People like that come from outside and they just want to make a quick buck and they may or may not fix your house.”

Garcia recommends getting at least three bids before signing a contract or handing over a check.

If you’re ever unsure about a company, Garcia recommends calling the BBB at 256-533-1640.
