Kennebec Valley Community College in Fairfield is on track to receive $803,000 in federal funding to establish a plumbing college.

The news was announced Thursday in a statement from the office of US Senator Susan Collins, R-Maine, who is vice chair of the Senate Budget Committee.

The funding comes from the 2024 Agriculture and Rural Development Budget Bill approved by the Budgets Committee on Thursday, Collins said.

The bill will now go to full vote in the US Senate and House of Representatives.

In the statement, Collins said the job training programs offered by KVCC are “tested, successful tools that help young people prepare for rewarding careers.”

“As Maine sees increasing demand in the plumbing industry, this timely funding will support the construction of a new training facility to provide more students with the hands-on and enhanced experiences they need to enter the workforce,” said Collins in the explanation.

The plumbing training facility would be located on the KVCC Fairfield campus and would accommodate larger classes and provide an opportunity for high school students interested in a career in the plumbing and heating industry.

The college’s education is intended to be offered as part of the school’s plumbing and energy services program and to provide students with the education, certification, and licenses from the State of Maine necessary for such careers.
