INDEPENDNECE — Work is scheduled to get underway on a plumbing replacement project at three schools in the next two weeks, according to a report by Grayson County Division Superintendent Kelly Wilmore.

Wilmore told the Grayson County School Board at its Jan. 8 meeting that the project calls for the replacement of plumbing at Grayson County High School and Independence Middle School, and restrooms in the hallway of the CATE Center.

Clark Brothers Construction of Stuart are the general contractors. The project is expected to take about six months to complete. The contract price approved for the project was $1.07 million.

Only one bid was received for the plumbing work, from Clark Brothers. The bid was approved by unanimous vote at the school board’s Dec. 11 meeting.

In December, Wilmore also recommended that the board give permission for Skanska, a project engineer, to go into contract negotiations with Clark Brothers.

Wilmore said the school had funds available for the project.

Fairview Leaks

Wilmore also told the board that there is still a water problem at Fairview Elementary School. “We’ve done everything possible to stop the water, but it’s still coming in,” he said.

New windows were installed in the school about three years ago, but Wilmore said they are not the problem.

“It seems like we have a different problem in every room, depending on the direction the wind blows and the rain comes down,” according to Wilmore.

He said he has contacted a structural engineer to come to the school on a rainy day to help come up with a solution to the leaks.

In the meantime, buckets will be placed in the school when it rains.

Scoreboard Issues

In another school-related issue, Chairwoman Diane Haynes told the board that several people had complained to her about the scoreboard in the old gymnasium at the high school.

“People say they can’t see the score,” she said.

Wilmore said the scoreboard is old and a lot of the light bulbs are burned out, making it hard to read.

He said they are working on the scoreboard and replacing the bulbs. He said he would try to find a local business sponsor to possibly purchase a new scoreboard.
