A Wilkes-Barre business has been closed for more than a month after a faulty water heater was forced to close.

WILKES-BARRE, Pa. – When Dan Shisson took over the Abide Coffeehouse on West Market Street in Wilkes-Barre, a “closed” sign wasn’t what he wanted to put on the window.

“I just took charge on November 1st. I quit my job after 29 years and we’ve really built some momentum in the city here just by opening the doors, introducing longer hours and offering a lot of services, products and different ideas for people.” Come in and use the space,” Shisson said.

That came to an end on June 9th.

“Getting a call at 1 a.m. isn’t fun because your business is flooded, so we came down, and the fire department and the police were already in, and water was pouring through the ceiling like a waterfall and stuff like that.” At the top of the worst spot in the store — on top of the register, on top of the groceries, on top of the supplies, on top of the equipment,” he recalls.

The cause was a defective water heater in an apartment above the shop.

“Shortly after that, the ceiling collapsed and it was a total disaster,” Shisson said. “We’re on the right track, and then that happened and we shut that down real quick.”

Shisson says the support from the community, including neighboring cafes, has been incredible.

“As soon as people found out, we received literally hundreds of emails, phone calls, texts and letters, and donations. So we have a wonderful staff. We want to keep her. So, in the meantime, the funds donated have benefited them.”

Once the floor is replaced this week, Shisson says it will only need a few more days to stock the shelves and get staff acquainted with the new equipment. It hopes to reopen early next week.

We would like to inform you why we have not reopened. So much water has gotten into the floor that it’s denting…
