South Lanarkshire College has been chosen by the Scottish and Northern Ireland Plumbing Employers’ Federation (SNIPEF) as the venue for the 39th annual Scottish Plumbing Apprentice of the Year (SPAY) competition on 7 June 2024.
The SPAY competition, a cornerstone of the plumbing and heating industry’s annual calendar, showcases the talents and commitment of plumbing apprentices across Scotland, highlighting the crucial role the profession plays in supporting the national economy, its infrastructure and the nation’s low-carbon transition.
This year, the competition introduces a new focus on sustainable practices, including the official introduction of a renewable technologies category, demonstrating a commitment to environmental sustainability.

The SPAY competition challenges apprentices in three distinct areas: copper, lead, and renewable technologies, each assessing crucial skill sets from precision in copper pipework and traditional craftsmanship in lead work to innovative solutions in renewable technology installations. These categories reflect the diverse skills required of a plumbing and heating professional and underscore the ongoing transition towards sustainable and environmentally friendly practices.
Speaking about the competition’s evolution and alignment with the profession’s growing sustainability requirements, Stephanie Lowe, deputy chief executive of SNIPEF, said: “The ongoing revision of Scotland’s Modern Apprenticeship in Plumbing and Heating, now integrating additional renewable technology skills, underscores SNIPEF’s steadfast commitment to preparing apprentices for pivotal roles in facilitating our nation’s transition towards a low-carbon and sustainable future.
