Apprentices compete in the Copper, Lead and Renewable Energy categories on Friday 16 June at Glasgow Clyde College’s Cardonald Campus

SCOTLAND’S most promising apprentice plumbers will put their skills to the test in a head-to-head competition vying for the prestigious title of Scottish Plumbing Apprentice of the Year. Organized by the Scottish and Northern Ireland Plumbing Employers’ Federation (SNIPEF), the event will take place on Friday 16 June at Glasgow Clyde College’s Cardonald Campus.

Now in its 38th year, this hands-on competition challenges trainees in two material categories: copper and lead, and a newly introduced renewable energy category, which includes a mix of theory, design and practical elements in this increasingly important area of technology.

Under the close scrutiny of leading industry experts, participants undergo a rigorous series of tests to assess their individual skills, techniques and employability characteristics. Each trainee has the opportunity to demonstrate their extensive knowledge, technical skills, project management, accuracy and professionalism, all within a strict deadline.

The winner of each category receives the prestigious title of Scottish Plumbing Apprentice of the Year (category). Copper category winners have the chance to advance to the WorldSkillsUK National Finals if they earn enough points against other industry competitors around the world.

Fiona Hodgson, Managing Director of SNIPEF, said: “The competition provides our future industry leaders with an invaluable platform to showcase their skills and potential.” It is truly inspiring to see the talent and determination these trainees bring to the prestigious fight for the title of Scottish Plumbing Apprentice of the Year.

“This competition not only underscores the technical expertise of these professionals, but also highlights the vitality of our industry in training skilled workers. Our aim at SNIPEF is to continually support these talents and it is always a pleasure to see them take on this challenge with such remarkable skill and professionalism.

“The competition also comes at a good time as SNIPEF has just received funding from the Scottish Government for 400 new apprenticeships in plumbing and heating, helping to ensure our profession can deliver on Scotland’s goal of moving towards a low-carbon society. “

Established in 1975, the competition is supported by academia and many well-known plumbing and supply chain companies including: City Plumbing, Graham Plumbers Merchant, BPEC, William Wilson, Aqualisa, Resideo, Mueller Europe, Fernox, Aalberts Integrated Piping Systems, Marsh Commercial, Monumental Tools, Beneath Heat, ALM and The Electric Heating Company.
