ROCKFORD, Ill. (WIFR) – With below freezing temperatures making its way to the Rockford area, there are things homeowners and those in apartments can do to prevent their pipes from freezing.

Pearson Plumbing & Heating Assistant Vice President Michael Letsinger recommends walking around your house to check for any foundational cracks, make sure garage doors are closed to keep icy air out, and trickle your pipes to prevent freezing.

These tips will prevent pipes from bursting and save you thousands of dollars. If your pipes do freeze, turn off your water main and attempt to thaw them.

Make sure you don’t use any open flames or any kind of battery charges to try to thaw the lines. That’s a real fire hazard. You can use a hairdryer. We have heat guns, which put a little more heated air on the pipes to thaw them, or just let them thaw naturally.”

You should also look for any cracked windows and foundations, cover the pipes and open cabinets below the sinks. If your pipes do break, shut the water off and call a licensed plumber.

“It’s not the cost of fixing the pipes but all the damage they do you have to open walls and ceilings dry wall has to be done has to be painted so conservatory if it’s in the open in the basement it be simple as $300-$400 if it’s in the walls and the second floor it can go up to $4,000, $5,000 even $10,000.”
