DAUPHIN COUNTY, Pa (WHP) — The Broad Street Market’s temporary tent is one step closer to opening after a generous donation from a local construction company.
The City of Harrisburg announced Monday that the McClure Company offered to install plumbing inside the temporary tent free of charge.
The work, estimated to take three weeks, will provide hot and cold water to the 16 registered vendors, according to a press release from the City.
The McClure company, which was already installing a new HVAC system in Harrisburg City’s Public Safety Building, said the donation will provide a total of $65,000-70,000 in services.
McClure Company President and CEO Shayne Homan said the company was exploring ways it could help the tent project when it noticed the city was struggling to find contractors who could handle the plumbing.
“Every time you turned on the news, it was impossible not to hear about it,” Homan said, according to the press release. “It became harder for us to sit back and watch it unfold, when we knew we had the capacity to do the job. We just wanted to figure out financially how to make it work and help the city out.”
According to the press release, members of Dauphin County-based Local 520 Plumbers & Pipefitters union will complete the work.
The donation follows the City’s finalized contract with KCS Electric, which agreed to complete all electrical work inside the temporary tent.
The City of Harrisburg hopes that vendors will be able to move into the temporary tent in spring of 2024.
“None of this happens if Harrisburg isn’t a proud, union-strong city,” said Harrisburg Mayor Wanda Williams, according to the press release. “The road to get our Broad Street Market back has not been easy but it will be worth it. McClure’s generous donation gets us one step closer to a grand re-opening.”
