Business Spotlight: Glanz/Buffat plumbing, heating and cooling

A century ago, business was a little different. When Christian Glanz, the original owner of Glanz Heating & Cooling, started his plumbing business in the spring of 1923, he drove around downtown in a handcart to get jobs done, carrying his tool bag with him. Some of his customers paid him in cakes and other baked goods rather than money.
Glanz lived to be in his 90s and worked in his business until his death, although his son and two daughters ran the day-to-day operations for many years before his death.
Around the same time, in 1925, Buffat Services, a certified HVAC contractor, was founded.
Fifteen years ago the two companies merged, relocated to Jeffersontown and became Glanz/Buffat Plumbing, Heating and Cooling.
“That name means everything because people know and appreciate the history,” says Keith Steinmetz, who co-owns the company with Jason Logsdon. The two men began working together at Glanz in 1996 and when the opportunity to buy presented itself, they jumped at the chance.
When Steinmetz started at Glanz there was a loyal group of people who had worked there for 25 to 30 years.
“They kept their employees,” says Steinmetz, whose father and grandfather are also plumbers. Starting out in trade school, Logsdon learned about sheet metal and progressed to become an HVAC service technician.
The company has been in existence for 100 years since March. Steinmetz firmly believes that the reason the company has lasted so long is its ongoing commitment to people. That dedication has never wavered, even as the company changed hands.
“We‘We’ve been around for so long because people know they can trust us,” says Steinmetz. “People tell us that we were recommended to them because we‘To be honest we stand behind what we do and our prices are fair.”
He openly admits that they aren’t the cheapest in town, but they are fair, reliable and trustworthy which is why they have around 6,000 customers in their customer base and an average of five new customers a week from word of mouth alone.
“If we give you an estimate and later realize we missed something, we win‘You won’t be charged any extra,” he says. “We eat this prize. The‘That’s why we have a good reputation.”
They work on many brands of equipment and plumbing, offer 24-hour emergency service, and stand by their one-year labor warranty on everything they do. Also, if you call and leave a message, they‘will reply promptly. That might sound like a simple service, but Steinmetz says it is‘It’s amazing how often he hears clients complain that they had a company to get something done and now that they are doing it‘If you have problems, no one from this company will call you back.
“A guarantee is only as good as the piece of paper‘s written when you don‘I don’t stand behind it,” says Steinmetz. “If we screw up, we‘re quick to say ‘We‘ll take care of it for free.‘ We have‘Without this philosophy we would not have made it 100 years.”
