Flat Rock business offers plumbing apprentice program

Anthony Rodriguez, owner of Z Plumberz in Flat Rock, has witnessed the shortage in skilled trades workers, especially on the plumbing side. It’s one of the reasons his business is offering an apprentice program.

“I learned from my Uncle Matt. He owned a plumbing business that focused on new construction commercial projects,“ Rodriguez said in an email. “Our business offers commercial and residential services. We love doing additions and helping with remodeling projects. However, we try to stay away from the new construction side.”

The 30-year-old has been a licensed plumber for more than five years and works with apprentices through a state of Michigan program. He operates a business at 25249 Telegraph Road, a part of Belfor Franchise Group.

“A person 18 years or older must register for $15 to become a plumbing apprentice. After that, you must renew it every year until you become a master plumber,” he said. “After three years and 6,000 hours as an apprentice under a master plumber, you can take your journeyman exam. It then repeats with two more years and 4,000 hours under a master plumber license in order to apply for your own.”

He estimates anyone deciding to get into plumbing will be on board for an increase in pay, job security and a skill that can’t be taken take away.

“If I’m not mistaken, 80% of master plumbers are over the age of 65. That huge gap will create an even higher demand for plumbers that should significantly increase a plumber’s wages,” he added. “Another great thing about plumbing is that you can’t outsource it or get a robot to do it. Everyone needs a plumber!”

Information about becoming a licensed plumber is available on the Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs website, www.michigan.gov/lara or contact Rodriguez between 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at his Downriver business.
