ONTARIO, CA — The California Building Standards Commission has approved the incorporation of IAPMO’s Uniform Plumbing Code (UPC®) Appendix M — the Water Demand Calculator® — into the California Plumbing Code (CPC), marking a significant step towards more sustainable construction practices. Starting July 1, 2024, this innovative tool offers an alternative method for sizing water pipes in residential buildings, aiming to enhance water and energy efficiency statewide.

A Group Effort

In a collaborative push for environmental conservation, the Statewide Utility Codes and Standards Team championed the adoption of Appendix M during the 2022 Intervening Code Adoption Cycle. With backing from the California Water Efficiency Partnership (CalWEP) and 15 member agencies, this initiative underscores a collective commitment to sustainable water use. “The support from our partners and volunteers has been instrumental in this achievement,” stated Christoph Lohr, P.E., IAPMO’s Vice President of Technical Services and Research, highlighting the broad coalition behind this eco-friendly innovation.

Impactful Innovation

The Water Demand Calculator not only promises reduced carbon footprints for California homes but also addresses critical water quality concerns. By ensuring proper pipe sizing, it mitigates the risk of bacterial contamination, such as Legionnaires’ disease, while conserving water and lowering utility bills. California’s adoption of Appendix M reflects a growing trend towards precision in water conservation efforts, with the state joining nine others in embracing this groundbreaking approach to plumbing.

To Learn More

IAPMO is set to host a California Water Demand Calculator Webinar on July 1, offering a comprehensive overview of the tool’s benefits and implementation. Interested parties can register for the webinar and access additional resources, including version 2.2 of the Water Demand Calculator and informative videos, through IAPMO’s dedicated webpage. For further inquiries or feedback, Christoph Lohr can be contacted directly at christoph.lohr@iapmo.org.

This strategic move by California sets a precedent for integrating advanced technology with environmental stewardship in the construction sector. As more states follow suit, the Water Demand Calculator is poised to play a pivotal role in shaping a more sustainable and efficient future for America’s water infrastructure.
