Brookfield Police continue to investigate what appears to be a well-planned break-in at a plumbing business on 47th Street overnight July 6-7.

The owner called police around 8:05 am on July 7 after arriving at work to find that the rear chain link fence to the property had been cut from top to bottom to allow access to the property and that a broken one Windows gave access to the warehouse and offices.

According to the police report, an “extensive amount” of plumbing equipment was missing, including a directional drill, jackhammers, surveillance cameras and other items. The perpetrators also forcibly gained or attempted to gain entry to three work vans parked on the property, stealing items from at least one of them.

Clues at the scene led police to suspect that two trucks were used in the break-in, as there were two tire tracks on the lawn where the trucks appeared to be backing up to the cut fence.

  • A Brookfield resident who lives on DuBois Boulevard called police on July 8 and reported that sometime after July 6, someone entered his unlocked garage and took away approximately $900 worth of several power tools. Police have blacked out information about where exactly along DuBois Boulevard the burglary took place.
  • North Riverside Police responded at 5:20 p.m. on July 4 at North Riverside Park Mall, 7501 Cermak Road, after mall security guards alerted them to a black Range Rover with a broken passenger window.

When police were investigating the scene, the vehicle’s owner arrived and said the only thing missing was a cosmetic bag containing makeup worth about $500. The bag had been left on the passenger seat.

Security video showed a white Toyota Camry pulling up near the Range Rover on the upper parking level near Entrance 4. A man is seen exiting the Toyota and smashing the Range Rover’s window before reaching inside and grabbing the cosmetic bag. Then you see the Camry exiting the mall toward 26th Street.

Attempted car theft

A Riverside man called police on the morning of July 4 and reported that someone had broken into his Hyundai Accent, which was parked in the village lot on Pine Avenue and may have been left unlocked, and apparently attempted to steal it .

Police reported that there were no signs of a break-in, but that the steering column had been ripped off. No items were missing from the car, police said.

Check the reported laundry

A North Riverside resident went to police on July 8 and reported that someone had stolen and tampered with a check she had placed in a local mailbox and cashed it in the name of an unknown person.

The victim told police that he filed the check for $2,200 with the IRS on June 12 in the mailbox at 26th Street and Westover Avenue. On July 5, he reviewed recent bank transactions and found that the check for $2,200 had cleared but the “IRS” had been scratched off and replaced with someone else’s name.

The police continue to investigate.

hit and run

Riverside Police issued five subpoenas against a 32-year-old Elgin woman who drove away from the scene at approximately 8:15 p.m. on July 2 after her 2021 Dodge collided with a 1994 Nissan while they were both on First Avenue near the 31st Street heading south

The force of the impact spun the Nissan across the northbound lane and landed on the curb, where it came to a stop. The driver was unharmed, but the Nissan suffered severe damage to the passenger side and was no longer drivable, police said.

Through surveillance camera video, police were able to identify the 2021 Ford and contact the owner, who was the driver’s husband. The driver reportedly told police the road was wet and slippery and that when the two vehicles collided she panicked and left the area.

Teenager injured in accident

An 18-year-old Riverside man was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries after the car he was in went off the road and struck landscaping outside a house on the corner of Olmsted Road and South Delaplaine Road and then crashed into a fire hydrant before crossing the road at around 1:30 a.m. on July 3 and crashing into a speed limit sign and tree outside Harrington Park

A witness told police he saw someone running away from the accident through yards. Police learned that the vehicle’s owner lived elsewhere in Riverside and went there to contact the owner.

The police observed how the 18-year-old, who had blood on his left hand and an injured knee, tried to break into the apartment. He reportedly told police he was the driver and only occupant of the car at Harrington Park.

Police reported that the 18-year-old responsible for the accident appeared unaffected. Paramedics took him to the hospital for further evaluation.

Items stolen from storage location

Brookfield police were called to Kago Inc., 9000 31st St., on the afternoon of July 5 after the owner called to report several items stolen from the property.

Among the missing items were two pallets of concrete blocks, 26 railroad ties and a large BNSF brand wrench.

drunk driving

Riverside police charged a 32-year-old Chicago man with driving under the influence after an officer reported seeing him driving erratically on southbound Harlem Avenue just before 6 a.m. on July 5

The driver, who told police he was on his way to work after drinking alcohol the night before, reportedly appeared to still be intoxicated, and a breath test taken at the police station more than an hour after the traffic stop revealed that the driver’s blood alcohol level had been 0.195, which is more than double the legal limit of 0.08.

In addition to drunk driving, the driver was charged with three traffic violations.

These items come from police reports filed by Riverside, North Riverside and Brookfield Police Departments from June 29 to July 9 and represent a portion of the incidents to which police responded. Unless otherwise noted, all individuals named in these reports have only been charged with one crime. These cases have not been decided.
