Four cats were rescued after a fire broke out at a family home in Palatine on Monday, June 26, which firefighters believe was caused by plumbing work in a second floor bathroom.

The fire department responded at 8:23 a.m. to the number 1168 North Del Mar Dr. near Dundee and Hicks streets in Palatine to report a fire in a building. The first response to that call came from a neighbor who reported smoke.

The first unit arrived three minutes after the initial alarm and reported smoke and fire coming from the side and roof of the house. The alarm has been upgraded to a building fire reaction alarm. The first firefighters routed a hose line to the outside of the house and another hose line to the inside to extinguish the fire. Other responders used thermal imaging cameras to search for victims.

All residents were safely housed outside the home. The fire was contained on the second floor and attic and was declared under control at 8:49 am. An initial search of the home discovered four cats, which were returned to the homeowner. Responders conducted salvage operations to protect first floor items from further damage and rehabilitated voids to determine there was no further fire.

No firefighters or civilians were injured in the fire. Damage estimates are currently not available.

According to the fire department, there were no working smoke detectors in the house. The Fire Department is reminding everyone to have working smoke detectors in their homes, whether it’s a single family home, apartment or condominium.
