Craven Community College (Craven CC) is offering a short-term Home Appliance Repair class at the Volt Center, beginning Dec. 5. This three-week course is offered Tuesday and Thursday evenings for quick, yet intensive training for students interested in working as a technician or at home on their own appliances.

This class teaches students the skills to repair appliances ranging from microwaves to washing machines, and everything in between, including both gas and electric models, and learning how to perform maintenance on evolving smart technology in appliances. This course also includes a limited subscription to ServiceMatters, which gives students access to technical support while on the job, so they’re better equipped starting out in the workforce.

“Craven CC sees the potential for home appliance repair technicians, where the median annual wage is $46,600,” said Jeffrey Schulze, Director of the Volt Center. “While the opportunity to learn leads to job opportunities in manufacturing and appliance repair, it’s also a great opportunity for homeowners to learn to troubleshoot and repair their own equipment.”

Market statistics indicate the appliance sector is a $448 billion dollar-per-year industry, showing that just in 2020, 576.8 million units were sold. With every household having appliances for cooking, food storage, and cleaning, the repair industry will never run out of customers to serve. With smart technology evolving so quickly, trained technicians who understand that technology are in high demand.

Craven CC’s Home Appliance Repair course is designed to serve all students, regardless of experience or background. Any student can take this course if they have already been in the repair industry, or if they are ready for a career change. Students interested in taking the Home Appliance Repair course do need to bring a multimeter to class and have a basic knowledge of electricity and mechanical systems. With the low tuition and requirements to take this class, this is an ideal class for homeowners to take to understand how to maintain and repair their own appliances.

Classes will go over electricity, electronics, gas for appliances, and introduction to repair, with each type of appliance getting its own focus. At the end of the course, students should be able to analyze operation of malfunctioning equipment, conduct performance testing, and diagnose mechanical problems. Students will also be prepared to repair malfunctions they have diagnosed, and with access to the professional tech support subscription, students can approach repair jobs with confidence, having the manufacturers on their side with additional diagnosis and repair assistance.

This class has limited capacity, so interested students are encouraged to sign up right away. All course details and steps for registration can be found at CravenCC.edu/Volt
