Ian Palmer-Smith, appliance expert at Domestic & General, said: “Washing machine life really depends on the quality of your machine. However, with proper care, they can work effectively for up to 20 years.”

1. You use too much detergent

Sometimes clothes can get extra dirty, making it seem like you need more detergent, but that can be a problem.

Ian explained: “If you use too much detergent, it can be difficult for the washing machine to drain the excess effectively. This then causes clothes and linens to feel sticky or slimy – which is not what you want.

“In addition, excessive amounts of detergent can damage your washing machine due to build-up and residue.”

Over time, this can cause the water to stop flowing as it normally would, and even result in a leak that needs to be repaired.”

2. You put too much in your washing machine

While it’s always a good idea to top up the machine, it’s important to strike a balance between saving energy and potentially damaging the machine.

As a general guideline, the equipment expert recommended filling the machine 80 percent full. He said: “Your washing machine needs the right amount of water to wash effectively.

“If you overfill the machine, clothes may come out less clean and still have visible stains. Not only can that be frustrating, it comes at a price.”

Overloading the drum will subject the machine to high stress and weight that can cause damage to the machine if the load is greater than what the unit is designed for.

3. Your device is wobbly

The position of your machine might not get too much attention, but making sure it’s level is crucial and one of the “most important” steps, according to the expert.

This may seem obvious, but an uneven appliance can shift too much during the spin cycle, potentially causing damage or denting.

To avoid this, check that all feet are touching the floor and adjust the front leveling feet to the correct height.

4. You ignore the lint filter

The appliances pro continued, “While lint may not pose a potential hazard to servicing your washing machine, over time accumulation could cause problems.

“Washing machines have a lint filter that helps collect and trap these fibers. However, if this is not removed regularly, it can clog the machine and leave your clothes full of lint.”

5. You don’t clean the machine regularly

Although the washing machine cleans clothes, it also needs regular cleaning to keep them in top condition.

The best way to do this is to run an empty cycle and add a small amount of white vinegar to get rid of stubborn residue and bacteria.
