Friday’s storm toppled trees, power lines and countless branches around Kansas City. But the local communities are there for you: If you are still struggling with the aftermath of the storm, you can hand in debris from the storm or have it removed.

Kansas City, Missouri

There are three drop-off locations in Kansas City where city residents can pick up tree branches and other storm debris free of charge. You must bring ID and proof that you live in Kansas City. You can find the drop-off points here:

You can also request leaf and shrub collection through the myKCMO app or by calling 311. You can make an appointment from now until Sunday 23 July. Pickup begins Monday, July 24th. So make sure your trash is at the curb by 7pm that day.

Residents can also hand out up to 10 garbage bags this week on their regular pickup day.

Kansas City, Kansas

Residents of Kansas City, Kansas can drop off debris from Friday’s storm in two locations:

All lawn clippings must be less than four feet in length to be accepted at both locations. The landfill only accepts branches and logs less than 3 inches in diameter, while the garden waste center accepts those less than 12 inches in diameter.

Residents can also have their trash collected by disposing of it with their trash on their normal collection day. Each bag or bundle must weigh less than 50 pounds. Branches must be tied in bunches less than 10 cm in diameter and less than 100 cm long.

Overland Park

Overland Park’s Parks Department Headquarters at 11921 Hardy St. will receive debris from the storm from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on the following days:

  • Monday 17th July

  • Saturday 22nd July

  • Sunday 23 July

Proof of residency in Overland Park is required and you don’t have to bundle your branches or put your trash in bags. Residents can also file an OPCares application with the city to attend to a fallen or damaged tree if it is within the city’s right-of-way, typically less than 11 feet from the curb.

independence

The City of Independence will host a free storm debris drop-off site at 875 Vista Ave for two days. open:

  • Wednesday, July 19 from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m

  • Saturday, July 22 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m

Independence residents may drop branches, brushwood and storm debris at the depot, but will not accept trash or bags of leaves/grass clippings. Proof of residence is required.

lenexa

Lenexa residents can drop off storm debris at the Municipal Services Center at 7700 Cottonwood St. on Saturday, July 22 and Sunday, July 23 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Proof of residency is required and only tree debris from the most recent storm will be accepted.

The city will also begin roadside storm debris pickup on Wednesday, July 19. Check out the map below to see when debris will be collected in your area.

The City of Shawnee has opened a storm debris dump at the southeast corner of Johnson Drive and Renner Road. It is open weekdays from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. and is open only to Shawnee residents. To get to the drop off point use the address 5868 Renner Road.
