CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (KFVS) — The threat of flooding and damaging winds is prompting tree removal services and insurance agents to brace for the busy days ahead.

At Advanced Tree Service in Jackson, Missouri, Tony Troendle prepared his business for the next threat of flooding and high winds. Troendle says that when he comes to a call, the majority of people don’t know how to handle the situation.

“They don’t know who to call, they don’t know what to do, they just know they have a tree on their house and it’s raining,” Troendle said.

At Golden Rule Insurance, Ashley Sumner said the first person to call is your insurance agent and can call anytime.

“If I get a call in the middle of the night, like our other agents, we pick up and see if our people are okay,” Sumner explained.

She said the next step was to take some photos and make sure you document everything.

“We have our surveyors come out to look at everything, access the damage, and from there we go as far as filing claims,” Sumner said.

Tony Troendle said to call an arborist after insurance. He said removing a tree or trees from a home takes one to two hours at best, but could be an ordeal lasting several days at worst.

Troendle also said you can look for signs that rain or water might be affecting your trees.

“A lot of things we look for, particularly with water intrusion, is root base erosion. So if your tree is in an ordinary spot that has water running continuously past it when it tends to rain a lot, it’s a good thing to keep it. If you’re looking for something, you might want to look at some landscaping, to divert water later,” Troendle said.
