University’s arboretum and tree maintenance program take a bough : News Center

The Department of Horticulture and Horticulture has accepted three national awards on behalf of the university.

The University of Rochester is nationally known for having its own arboretum with a collection of different species of trees from all over the world. The arboretum is home to 7,716 trees and 212 different species on the River Campus and at the Eastman School of Music, the Memorial Art Gallery, the Medical Center, and the Mt. Hope Campus, some of which date back to the university’s early days. The Department of Horticulture and Horticulture — a unit of university facilities and services — is responsible for the year-round care of the arboretum and has recently accepted three awards, demonstrating the university’s commitment to maintaining and promoting healthy trees on campus.

“It is a great honor to receive this recognition on behalf of our institution, and it is a result of the Horticulture and Grounds team’s commitment to providing a beautiful campus for our university community,” said John McIntyre, Manager of University Horticulture and Grounds . “We have an impressive, diverse collection of tree species on our campus and take great pride in tending to them because we understand the natural benefits that healthy trees offer our students, faculty, staff and visitors, including maintaining a pleasing aesthetic. “ Campus and shaded areas for learning and gathering.”

Tree Campus USA

The university was again recognized as a Tree Campus USA Institution. Tree Campus USA is a national program of the Arbor Day Foundation, the world’s largest non-profit membership organization dedicated to planting trees. To receive the award this year, the university again exceeded the five standards of the Tree Campus USA program, which include maintaining a tree advisory committee, a campus tree care plan, special annual tree spending, observing Arbor Day, and learning in the service of the students include projects.

PGMS honorary award for excellent floor care

The Professional Grounds Management Society (PGMS) has recognized the University of Rochester with an Honor Award as part of their Green Star Awards competition. The award is presented in the Medium-sized Educational, College and College Campus category (201-499 acres) for exceptional site maintenance. The Green Star Awards program provides national recognition for a high level of excellence in manicured properties and complements other national landscape awards programs that recognize outstanding landscape design and construction. In all, PGMS presented 19 honorary awards nationwide.

University Arboretum Receives Accreditation

The University of Rochester Arboretum has received Level II arboretum accreditation from ArbNet, which created its arboretum accreditation program to establish and share a widely recognized set of industry standards to unite the arboretum community. There is no other international accreditation program specific to Arboreta.

As part of the Morton Register of Arboreta, the university’s role in the common goal of planting and conserving trees is highlighted, and accreditation recognizes the institution’s commitment to meeting and meeting professional criteria.
