COUNTY NEWS RELEASE

Spring has sprung, so County tree trimming has begun. Coordinated by the Department of Public Utilities (DPU) to mitigate hazards and power outages, the tree trimming effort targets branches that are in the right-of-way or on utility easements for power lines.

DPU’s contractor, Southwest Fire Defense & Tree Services, is conducting the work throughout Los Alamos County. The work is planned on a neighborhood-by-neighborhood basis in order of priority. While current trimming is occurring in the townsite, some White Rock neighborhoods are on the list as well.

DPU staff are responsible for identifying branches that need attention. Community members who are concerned about specific branches are encouraged to report those branches to DPU through the County’s Los Alamos Now app or by using the web address https://ladpu.com/trees. If possible, anyone submitting information should include photos. An informational video about the responsibilities of customer vs. DPU can be found at https://ladpu.com/WhoTrims.

The tree trimming effort reduces the number and scope of power outages by removing branches and trees that are either too close to power lines or pose a risk of falling on power lines. This initiative, coupled with an aggressive operation and maintenance program, supports DPU’s Electric Reliability Plan. As a public power utility, improving electric reliability is a top priority for DPU in serving the community.

It is important to note that not all overhead lines in Los Alamos County are electric power lines. The tree trimming focuses only on branches growing into power lines, not other types of cables that may be strung between poles.
