Tree listening, climbing and art at Exbury Gardens

You can listen inside a tree, watch the pros scale tree heights in a tree climbing competition, or enjoy an art exhibition with a tree-themed twist during a special series of tree-themed events at Exbury Gardens.

The 200-acre New Forest visitor attraction is home to the Tree Listening Project until July 2nd.

It uses highly sensitive microphones to hear the movement of water as it travels from the bottom to the leaves.

Visitors can put on headphones, listen and thus gain a deeper insight into how the tree works.

Trees will also be the focus of a new two-day tree climbing competition, pitting professional arborists against each other in a series of tree care events on June 17th and 18th.

The competition is an awe-inspiring spectacle and an opportunity for the public to learn more about tree care skills.

The event is being organized by Christopher Hoare Tree Services who will set up a climbing wall and throwing line game for Exbury visitors.

There will also be demonstrations of wood turning and carving, showing how sustainably sourced wood is used in traditional crafts.

Magnificent ‘veteran’ trees are the focus of two garden tours hosted by Exbury’s expert gardeners (7th and 23rd June) and trees will also feature in an exhibition by the Solent Art Collective at the Five Arrows Gallery within the gardens (17th of June). until July 2nd).

Ten professional local artists, makers and photographers will showcase their work and celebrate the local landscape and wildlife.

Tom Clarke, head gardener at Exbury, told the Daily Echo: “We love trees in Exbury, they provide the structure of our garden and are home to many rare plants.”

“They are also very important in their own right and we have some wonderful specimens from around the world in our unique corner of the New Forest.”

Other events in June 2023 at Exbury Gardens include half price entry for dads on Father’s Day, a model railway exhibition on 17th and 18th June and War Walks on 10th June.
