LAKESIDE, Calif. — “Things are happening,” Tim Griggs said in response to the giant eucalyptus tree that fell on his Lakeside home Thursday morning.

“The tree was huge – it was already leaning towards the house. I had a feeling something was going to happen,” Griggs said.

Part of the 120- to 140-foot-tall tree, which was on a neighbor’s property, fell on the roof, ripping a hole over the dining room and leaving debris and shattered glass on the floor.

Griggs says thankfully no one was home at the time. But neighbors called to tell him what had happened.

“They said it sounded like an earthquake and just a really loud rumble as it came down,” Griggs said.

A team spent the next day cutting down part of the tree to get it out of the house.

Due to Thursday’s Santa Ana winds and soil saturated by recent rain, local logging companies are overwhelmed.

“We received a lot of calls. We’ve seen a lot of trees fall – I see them everywhere,” said Larry Coalson, owner of LC Tree Service.

According to Coalson, tree felling can be a slow, dangerous and costly process, with some jobs costing tens of thousands of dollars.

“It’s really about who can get there the quickest and make a pretty competitive bid,” Coalson said. “Offers will be high because there is a lot of insurance work. There are many variables – all these different loads. That makes the job a lot more dangerous.”
