A tree protection regulation for the beech trees on a Barrow house came into force in 1973.

John Holmes of Spring Grove applied to Barrow Council to cut down the tree after it was confirmed to be infected with meripilus, a fungus that cannot be treated.

Gliga Tree Services provided a supporting statement to the local council, which said: “I have inspected the tree in question and can confirm that it is infected with Meripilus, a fungus which unfortunately cannot be treated, meaning that every tree will eventually die off with Meripilus.” and become a security risk. The tree in question is now dying and is therefore dangerous. It must be removed.”

The council gave the go-ahead, saying the work would need to be completed in two years and a replacement lime, sycamore or oak tree at least six feet tall to be planted.

The council said this was because the tree “added to the local forest character and visual appeal of the area”.
