MONTERVILLE, WV (LOOTPRESS) – A longtime lumberjack was the victim of an industrial accident in Randolph County earlier this month and sustained injuries that ultimately succumbed to his death.

Sheriff Rob Elbon of the Randolph County Sheriff’s Office reports that at 2:10 p.m. on June 1, 2023, Sheriff Elbon and Deputy Tyler Knotts responded to a call reporting a logging accident occurring on Turkey Bone Road near the Monterville, West Virginia, area of Randolph County.

Responders responded to an accident site 8.5 km from RT 15 and 4.3 miles on a logging road to a logging dock where the accident occurred approximately 0.75 to 1 mile in a wooded area where logs were being harvested and were felled.

Health Net’s helicopter units have been alerted to the possibility of their need in the response effort. However, upon arrival of the fire and medical units at the scene, it was determined that Health Net would not be required for the response effort.

After police arrived at the scene, an investigation was launched to determine the sequence of events leading up to the incident. Responding officers spoke to those present at the scene and began gathering evidence related to the investigation, which included taking photographs at the scene.

A male individual — identified as David Moreland, 54, of Scherr, WV — was identified based on evidence gathered at the scene that he was preparing to secure a felled log when a bulldozer approached with a cable to tie the log to remove. A tree on the hillside is found to have been uprooted and fell forward towards the bulldozer and Moreland itself. The latter was hit by the tree and sustained injuries he did not survive.

Moreland was reportedly employed by the logging company for 15 years. Huttonsville – Mill Creek Fire Departments and Randolph County EMS conducted the body’s recovery, which was transported to Davis Medical Center in Elkins, West Virginia.

“Prayers to Mr. Moreland’s family and the Witnesses, as well as the owner and family of the Logging Company,” Randolph County Sheriff Rob Elbon said in a statement.
