BARBERTON – Linger’s Lumberjacks, 1881 Wadsworth Road, is a complete tree care business that has served Barberton, Norton and the surrounding communities for nearly 30 years, according to owner Nelson Linger.
“My brother was in [tree service] “We did a business once and we did a side job once,” Linger said of starting the company. “We made some pretty good money doing that, and I said, ‘Man, we could do that.’ My background was mainly in customer service [other tree services] I don’t have that background.”
Linger said the company, founded in 1994, has grown to 25 employees with three full-time crews and one full-time in-house mechanic, and offers tree pruning and removal, trellis and stumps removal, full cleaning on every job, and 24-hour emergency service at no cost to cost estimates and financing according to the motto “No order is too big or too small”.
Linger said his staff maintained a high level of excellence that has made the company one of the leading tree service providers in the region. The company is particularly distinguished by its family-oriented corporate culture, he said.
“Our average employee has worked here for more than 20 years,” Linger said. “They are really experienced, good people who take great pride in their work. We’ve always had the philosophy that we’d rather lose money than let anything bad be said [our service].”
The company’s other services include crane and bucket services, property clearing, commercial snow plowing, and “tree wiring” – a technique that uses steel poles and cables to secure a tree that is mostly intact but has damage that leaves it vulnerable for wind, snow or snow can make ice.
Linger said the company also sells firewood, using every piece of wood left over from the work.
“All of our lumber is recycled and we have a processor that can process four to six cords [of firewood] an hour,” he said. “We now also have a timber truck that we can use to pick up tree trunks [for customers].”
Linger said the company serves customers in the landscaping and construction sectors, but the majority of its business remains in the private sector, with around 70% repeat customers.
He said he considers advising clients on trees a big part of his job and offers the following: Oak trees should not be pruned until late autumn to avoid a condition known as “oak wilt”; Homeowners should avoid planting large pine trees near a home; and property owners should be aware that it is their responsibility to remove a tree that falls on their property from a neighbor’s property.
“We’ve been around for a long time and we like to solve problems,” said Linger. “There has never been a tree that we walked away from. We can help anyone with any tree.”
