Lincoln arborist says tree checkups can prevent them from falling

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – Two trees fell in Lincoln this week, blocking traffic and damaging fences and a car.

Will Frerichs of Frerichs Lawn and Tree Services calls himself a tree doctor.

He said getting a checkup for your tree is important not only for the tree’s health, but for yours as well.

“From the ground, you’re going to see half of all problems occurring,” he said. “Trouble is, half of them you’re not going to see. They’re going to involve damage on the tops of a limb. And unless you can get 50 foot in a tree, you’re not going to see that.”

Frerichs said wind isn’t normally much of a threat during winter because there’s no leaves weighing trees down.

But if a tree is old or weakened, wind becomes a risk.

“You’re probably going to note that there’s a crack in the tree,” Frerichs said. “Particularly on a windy day, you might be able to see that crack opening up and closing.”

Tree limbs weigh hundreds or even thousands of pounds, so trimming them can make a tree more reliable against wind.

If your tree has storm damage or a ripped-off limb, pay attention to whether it’s getting weaker or hollowing out.

The city can require homeowners to remove trees that are deemed hazardous.

Frerichs said if you’d like to have your trees checked, be sure to call the experts before making cuts yourself.

Even for professionals, deciding when a tree isn’t safe can be difficult.

“Limbs dropping is the main concern, of course,” Frerichs said. “You don’t just go cutting trees down just ’cause they might be a problem. ‘Cause any tree, theoretically, a bad enough wind could hit it and cause a problem.”
