Since 2017 Ryan Gudenkauf and GTS Tree and Stump Services LLC have been offering their second-to-none services to residential, commercial, and municipalities.
According to Gudenkauf, GTS Tree and Stump Services LLC offers stump grinding, stump debris removal, soil replacement, and seeding.
Pretty much people call if they have an old stump they don’t want to mow around or if a tree service doesn’t offer stump grinding. I come out to quote them a price, said Gudenkauf. “After that, I do some background on the location of pipes or underground utilities and then I can also clean up the mess for you if you want.
Gudenkauf says the benefit of having a stump ground out, is all about curb appeal and not having to work around it.
“A lot of people call because they are just tired of mowing around stumps,” said Gudenkauf. “They can hurt the mower, and they can be a hazard for people as well. If you want to, we can grind it, throw grass over it, and be done.”
According to Gudenkauf, stump grinding is a lot better than dealing with the issue yourself.
“A lot of people try to burn it out and that works if you have a lot of patience and time,” said Gudenkauf. “That takes months and months, this removal by grinding, depending on the size of the stump, well let’s just put it this way, one time I ground out 36 stumps in five hours.”
When it comes to stumps, size and quantity do matter according to Gudenkauf.
“It is more cost-effective to do multiple stumps, said Gudenkauf. “I try to keep some sort of a minimum for a stump. If I am going to load up and grind one stump it has to be worth it. If people have multiple stumps, then I look at it as how many hours will it take and give them a better deal.”
Gudenkauf says that typically, he quits grinding for the season when the ground freezes.
“You can still grind but when you grind frozen dirt it kicks it back at me and I feel like I am being shot with bird shot,” said Gudenkauf. “So, when the ground gets frozen, I just quit.”
According to Gudenkauf, grinding stumps is similar to tearing them out but is actually much better for your yard than ripping a stump out altogether.
“The removal and grinding are pretty much the same,” said Gudenkauf. You can rip it out with an excavator and cause more damage and need more yard repair, then bring extra dirt in to fill in the spot. Or come in and grind it and turn that stump into mulch. If it is small enough you can just cover the spot with dirt after we are done and throw grass seed on it. Basically, removal of the stump takes a lot more work and does more damage.”
Gudenkauf’s advice is that even if you choose not to use GTS Tree and Stump Services LLC, make sure whoever you do decide to use knows what they are doing.
“After the derecho happened a lot of people tried to go out after the derecho and take care of their stumps because the street broke. Now a lot of times I go out to jobs people have already tried to deal with and didn’t do it properly,” said Gudenkauf. “That being said I am saying that if you are going to have it done make sure the person knows how to do it correctly.”
