A section of George Bass Drive between Broulee and Moruya will be closed for five days to allow access for Eurobodalla Shire Council staff.

The work is expected to take place from June 19th to 23rd. If the weather is nice, detours are planned.

The road between Broulee Road and Donnelly Drive will be closed between 7am and 5pm to allow Eurobodalla Shire Council to carry out tree maintenance work.

“Branches hanging over the road will be removed and trees sloping over the road will be assessed and removed as to whether they are dangerous,” a spokesman for the council said.

“The work is being carried out to minimize the risk of trees and branches falling onto the road and blocking access for residents, tourists and emergency services.”

A member of the community group Coastwatchers told About Regional that the group was initially concerned when the work was announced.

“Those are really old trees,” they said.

“It takes about 150 years for a cavity to develop. So they really don’t exist in large numbers as land is cleared for housing or fire protection depending on the circumstances.

“We don’t want them to be damaged.”

A variety of species, such as gang-gang cockatoos and glossy cockatoos, use burrows for activities such as shelter and breeding.

However, after speaking to the city council before work began, the spokesman said they were satisfied with the city council’s decision.

“After having this conversation, we worry less.

“No trees will be removed unless absolutely necessary and we have been told the work is being carried out to prevent hazards such as a falling branch.

“From an environmental perspective, we’re much happier with the news.”

According to the city government’s website, the passage of the road section is not possible for vehicles during working hours.

Additionally, access to the Princes Highway north of the closure must be via Broulee Road, while those approaching the closure from the south must use North Head Drive.

Those wishing to access Moruya Airport and nearby objects must use North Head Drive.

“All work will only be carried out within the road reserve,” said the Eurobodalla Shire Council spokesman.

“If tree cavities are removed, they will be relocated and nesting boxes provided.”
