Crews busy clearing downed trees across Sacramento

Tree removal companies and City of Sacramento crews are getting inundated with calls to remove downed trees and fallen branches across the city.During Sunday’s storm, strong winds whipped through the region and knocked down hundreds of trees. Days later, there is still a lot of work left to do.A spokesperson for the City of Sacramento said that, as of Thursday, city staff is currently addressing around 500 requests for service regarding downed branches and trees in parks, on roads and into homes. Of the 500 or so requests, 88 trees were reported down.Some of the city trees have been removed, but others are still blocking sidewalks including near the intersection of 21st and Q streets. The city said its crews are working hard to remove the trees.“Staff are staging wood and debris in parking areas to be picked up at a later date to continue addressing all requests as quickly as possible,” media and communications specialist Gabby Miller said.Tree removal companies are also keeping busy. Tree Services Sacramento CEO David Fitch said his company has received around 170 calls related to tree damage since Sunday afternoon.“I’ve seen a lot of incidents where trees literally fall onto roofs causing roof damage for sure,” Fitch said.KCRA 3 caught up with a Tree Services Sacramento crew Thursday, where a Chinese elm tree fell on top of a home in south Sacramento. A branch even punctured the roof and went into a bedroom. Fitch said the company’s three crews have been busy all week.“It’s been pretty nonstop since Sunday night,” Fitch said. “I believe this crew, for example, did a double day yesterday, so rather than working for 8 hours, they work for about 16.”Joe Holguin, project manager for Tree Services Sacramento, has visited around 50 homes since Sunday afternoon.“We’ve seen from a couple of limbs falling down to huge cedars completely wrecking homes,” Holguin said. “We’re seeing a ton of the tall Italian Cyprus trees, coast Redwoods, pine trees.”Holguin said because of the demand, he is getting creative when it comes to how they use their equipment.“We try to utilize our resources as best as possible. So, our guys are working sun up to sun down, sometimes past sun down. If we large equipment, we’re trying to utilize it to multiple locations,” Holguin said. “We’ve got to take all these trees off these houses, and then we’ll come back and finish it.”FB Tree Services, which is a family owned and operated company in Sacramento, has also been busy this week. KCRA 3 tagged along with a crew Thursday morning as they were cutting down a tree that was leaning against a home.“We’re making sure this tree is safe/ We’re going to cut it down, so it doesn’t fall any more than it already is,” employee Joseph Garcia said. “We’ve had trees go complete through houses, bedrooms broken, garages destroyed, cars demolished and just cleanup. It’s been hectic.”Tree removal companies expect to continue to be busy throughout the month.
