NORTON — Barberton Tree Service, located at 3307 Clark Mill Road, has been serving customers for 52 years and has plans for growth.
According to Lisa Devenport, vice president of Barberton Tree Service, the company was founded in 1971 when founder Keith Luck turned 16 years old and his grandmother gave him an old station wagon and chainsaw with hopes her grandson would put them to good use.
“Those two precious gifts, combined with a young and determined Keith Luck and a lot of good hard-working men and women, grew the business into a fleet of over 100 trucks and a 95-employee family enterprise,” Devenport said.
Luck set up shop on Milo Avenue in Barberton before moving to Norton in 2002 to join the company’s sister company, Mulch Makers of Ohio.
“This decision allowed us to be more efficient and pass on valuable savings to our customers through our ‘making a tree all it can be’ recycling policy,” Devenport said. “While both companies continue to expand, we are excited to announce that Barberton Tree Service will be returning to the Magic City in 2024, moving into a brand new, state of the art facility.”
Some of the services the company offers include stump removal, tree trimming and pruning and tree removal and clearing. The company offers free estimates for all services offered.
“We pride ourselves in specializing in large and hazardous tree removals as well as dangerous storm damage situations,” Devenport said.
Barberton Tree Service, which has 65 employees, offers service year-round as winter storms can be problematic for trees. Devenport also said there are certain trees such as oaks that can only be pruned during the colder months to avoid spreading disease. The company also offers special winter rates for work with 10 different fully-equipped crews servicing Medina, Portage, Stark, Summit and Wayne counties.
Barberton Tree Service has both residential and commercial clients with some of the commercial and municipal accounts including the City of Akron, Firestone Country Club, The University of Akron and Kenmore Construction Co.
Devenport said what makes the company stand out is being passionate and investing heavily in the company and careers.
“We take it seriously so our customers can take it easy,” she said. “Every employee from our president to our newest trainee is here because they are passionate about the tree care industry. We are here to give our customers the opportunity to experience the best, while still offering competitive prices.”
She said the company loves nothing more than to provide the pinnacle of customer service.
“It takes a special level of bravery to do what we do here,” Devenport said. “Taking care of our valued customers and making them happy is what we’re all about, especially in times of emergency. Nothing makes us happier than seeing an amazed little kid waving at us through the window. We are happy to be their heroes.”
She said the main challenge of the business is the trees themselves as they can be unpredictable due to weak root systems, splits, cracks, decay and diseases.
“When you add severe storms into the mix, the situation can become even more challenging,” Devenport said. “Most of the trees we work on are surrounded by various obstacles, so avoiding contact with houses, wires and landscaping puts our professionals to the test daily. Our employees love these challenges because each one they overcome enhances their knowledge and skillset.”
