In this video we examine the aftermath of last night storm damage on a majestic red oak. ISA certified arborist Wesley Rivers walks us through the scene and shows the effects of the storm on the tree.
Behind ISA-certified arborist Wesley, we see a large branch, about 12 inches in diameter, resting on the roof of a nearby garage. Another branch about 10 inches in diameter lies on the ground next to him. Wesley explains that the upper branch snapped off during the storm, causing a domino effect by taking the branch below with it.
Wesley draws our attention to the broken branch and highlights the decay at its end. He explains that the decay was caused by an old tree pruning that failed to heal over time, resulting in weakened wood and an increased likelihood of failure. The discoloration serves as evidence of this decay.
As we continue, Wesley points out another broken branch. The tip of this branch also shows discoloration, indicating an old pruning cut that has not healed properly. He explains that the removal of that branch resulted in sunburn, visible as a light gray area on the branch lying on the roof.
Wesley then demonstrates a hyperextended branch, emphasizing its length and concentrated weight at the end. He explains: The larger the branch length and branch weight, the greater the load on the attachment point. In this case, the weakened attachment failed, leaving a broken stump.
To mitigate such risks, Wesley proposes various measures. Some of the solutions he recommends include pruning the structure, reducing the final weight and removing defective branches. Implementing these techniques can significantly reduce the risk of branch failure.
