Here are today’s top three stories in Gainesville:
- The Gainesville City Commission changed the code for its Tree Mitigation Fund, allowing the $7.8 million fund to be used for expanded purposes beyond planting trees. Previously, the fund could only be used to plant trees on city lots or purchase nature reserves. The updated code now allows for the purchase of trees and planting equipment, tree pruning, tree canopy preservation through the purchase of conservation areas, and professional services related to urban forest development. The city’s tree canopy has declined significantly over the years and the fund aims to address this issue. (Main Street Daily)
- Alachua County Veterans Services and the City of Gainesville invite the community to participate in the annual Memorial Day ceremony on May 29 at historic Evergreen Cemetery. The event will remember and pay tribute to veterans and military personnel who gave their lives in the service of the nation. The ceremony will include various patriotic ceremonies, music and speeches by local leaders and lunch will be provided by sponsors. (City of Gainesville)
- Florida’s tourism industry experienced a record-breaking first quarter of 2023 with 37.9 million visitors. including 34.6 million domestic tourists and 1.8 million international tourists. As a result, state funding for Visit Florida could double to $100 million for the next fiscal year under Gov. Ron DeSantis’ proposed budget. Additionally, three airports in Florida, including Gainesville Regional Airport (GNV), receive grants as part of the Infrastructure Act. (The Capitoline)

- Gainesville for All (GNV4All) will hold a general meeting with guest speaker Marsha Kiner, Executive Director of Alachua County Children’s Trust. The meeting will be held in the Metcalfe Elementary School cafeteria and will provide supporters and the community with an opportunity to learn more about the Children’s Trust and its leadership. - The City of Gainesville offers grants to local organizations that want to host community events but need financial support. The Community Partnership Grant Program is designed to assist nonprofit and nonprofit organizations with the costs associated with special events in the Gainsville Community Reinvestment Area District. All events must be free and open to the public. The application deadline is Thursday, June 1st. (City of Gainsville)
