Storm Works Roofing Athlete of the Week Providence Journal poll

A few weeks into the fall season, and we’re starting to see some separation in the girls volleyball rankings. In Division I, La Salle, North Kingstown, Coventry and Chariho are sitting atop the standings; in Division II, East Providence, Cumberland and Mt. Hope are leading the pack. Tolman and Block Island remain unbeaten in Division III, while Juanita Sanchez has reached the 4-win mark, and in Division IV, Shea and Mount Pleasant are Nos. 1 and 2.

There’s plenty of season left, so who knows how those standings will look in a few short weeks, but one thing has been a constant — there have been so many strong individual performances that picking five of the top each week is no easy task. Such was the case last week, when we saw some outstanding games throughout the week.

We thank the many coaches who have been consistent in sending in game results. As a reminder, we ask all coaches to please email (pjsports@providencejournal.com) or call (401-277-7340) in the results each weeknight, from 6-10 p.m. We rely on you in order to post as complete a high school report as possible, and to pick the nominees for the weekly honors.

So who’s this week’s Storm Works Roofing & Restoration Athlete of the Week in Girls Volleyball? Well, that choice is yours. Here are this week’s nominees. And remember, there is no prize for our poll winners, except of course for bragging rights, so vote early and often and we’ll report on the winners at the end of each week.

Mazie Phillips, Mount St. Charles

Phillips had 13 kills, 2 aces and 14 digs in last week’s nail-biter against the Classical. Her performance helped the Mounties to a 3-2 win and to a 3-2 record in Division I.

Annie Draper, North Kingstown

Draper had a whopping 15 kills in a battle between cross-town rivals. The Skippers managed to slip past South Kingstown, 3-2, thanks in part to Draper’s powerful play.

Haley Conant, Block Island

Don’t look now but the Hurricanes are off to a 3-0 start on the young season, and the sophomore Conant is a big reason why. In a Division III matchup with Central Falls, Conant recorded 10 kills en route to 3-2 win.

Mary McNulty, Toll Gate

McNulty had 12 Kills, 7 digs, and 6 aces in a 3-2 victory over Woonsocket in a Division III battle last week. The Titans are just a bit off the pace, sitting at 3-1 in Div. III-B.

Kenzie Cleary, Burrillville

The Broncos are also at 3-1 in Division III-B (tied with Toll Gate for the second spot) and Cleary, a junior, helped the cause by recording 12 kills in a 3-0 victory over Woonsocket last week. The Broncos’ only blemish so far is a season-opening loss to first-place Tolman (4-0).
