HENDERSON, Texas (KETK) – Sometimes something good can come out of a bad situation. One Henderson woman is living that firsthand right now.
Businesses share how to avoid scammers targeting hail damaged roofs
“I just wanted it to go away,” said Susan Duncan, homeowner.
Over the summer Susan Duncan from Henderson was looking to replace the roof at her house, as well as her late mother’s.
“He was texting me all along, telling me we’re going get to it this time,” said Duncan.
After doing her research, which included visiting their website, scoping signs in yards around town, and even a BBB logo on their business card she chose Scope Restoration Roofing Construction for the job.
“But then there would be rain in the forecast or we will have that 100-degree weather,” said Duncan.
Around October her roof was still sitting untouched. Soon after she visited the company’s office in Henderson, only to find an eviction notice on their door, meaning she’d been scammed out of almost $30,000.
“I felt bad about it, I was embarrassed about it, didn’t want anybody to know,” said Duncan.
The BBB warns residents about roofing scams
Duncan wasn’t sure what she was going to do about the roof here at her mother’s home but to her surprise, StoneWater Roofing heard her story and has offered to replace it free of charge.
“Our goal was just try to help her out a little bit. Take some of the stress off of her and this huge ordeal that she’s been dealing with,” said Jacob Law, co-owner, chief operations officer, StoneWater Roofing.
“Well, I had prayed about it, and I think this is God’s answer,” said Duncan.
Law said giving back to the community is one of their core values and that scams like the one Duncan faces happen more than you think.
“The biggest advice we can give is to do your research, whether, no matter who they are, whether it’s us, do your research,” said Law.
Duncan and Law suggested that if you need a roofer, to ask a lot of questions, never give all the money upfront and try to pick someone that is rooted in the community.
