The project

The $197.5 million refurbishment of the MA Noble and Donald Bradman Stand at Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) was completed in July 2014 to provide an additional 13,360 seats on site and create a premier sports and leisure facility for NSW .

Fielders was commissioned by AW Edwards Pty Ltd and Cox Architects to provide a roofing solution for the new pavilion’s large canopy to cover 85% of the new seating.

The process

The Fielders mobile roll former was stationed on site at the SCG to roll the conical FreeForm panels to allow for faster panel unwinding. The materials were hoisted to the top of the pavilion by a crane using a 48m spreader bar, which required a 20-day rolling and installation process from start to finish.

The solution

Given the unique curved shape of the pavilion roof, the architect and contractor chose the FreeForm standing seam profile for its ability to meet the complex design brief. The roof was to curve in both directions, creating concave radii ranging from 120m in the middle to 55m at each end. The flexibility of the FreeForm system was used to create the natural curves required for the “helmet” synthesis. Style outline of the canopy.

Over 5,000m² of tapered white COLORBOND FreeForm 0.75mm BMT was supplied and the material was beveled from 400mm to 250mm to match the natural curves of the structure.
