ROBBINSDALE, Minn. — Robbinsdale Police are warning of a scam that has left some elderly homeowners with broken, unfinished roofs.

Officials say there have been several instances where a man has approached homeowners claiming he can fix a defect in their roof. The man states his name is “Tony” and that he is associated with roofing and renovation companies.

He then agrees to fix the problem with the roof. Then, together with a team, he dismantles part of the roof and leaves after receiving payment.

Police say large areas of the roof are sometimes left unprotected.

Authorities encourage people never to verbally authorize work to be carried out, but to use written contracts instead. They also recommend getting a second opinion, calling companies when the attorney produces a business card, and only paying for work when it’s complete.

Police are asking people to call 911 if anyone comes to a resident’s door trying to do roofing work.
