NASCAR Trucks Rackley Roofing 200 Race Preview

The NASCAR CRAFTSMAN Truck Series returns this week at the Rackley Roofing 200 at Nashville Superspeedway. The stakes continue to mount as this week’s race marks the first of four remaining chances for drivers to win to secure their place in the Championship Playoffs. NASCAR Cup Series regular Ryan Preece won the last two races of the Nashville Series, but there will be no previous winners reported for this week’s race. Friday’s competition marks the 16th time the trucks have taken to the circuit and in that time there have been 12 different winners. The first race in Nashville was held in 2001, but the series took a ten-year hiatus from the racetrack between 2011 and 2021. While this week’s winner is guaranteed to be a first-time Nashville winner, drivers Grant Enfinger, Zane Smith and Christian Eckes are all aiming for their third win of the season. There are still four playoff spots to be won on points alone, but everyone will try to avoid additional pressure by winning this week and securing their playoff spot. Matt DiBenedetto goes into the weekend in 10th and final playoff seed, a slender seven-point lead over Tanner Gray in 11th. As the regular season draws to a close, there’s still all that matters.

This week, the 1.33-mile D-shaped oval of the Nashville Superspeedway is available to drivers in the NASCAR CRAFTSMAN Truck Series. The track follows a similar pattern to a traditional 1.5 mile oval and is therefore heavily influenced by track position. Five of the last six series races at the track have been won by the pole sitter. Only once did a driver start from 20th place on the grid and win. Given the importance of track position this week, getting the setup right as soon as possible after unloading is the key to success. Teams don’t have much time on the track to take wild swings if they miss early, and so those who practice and qualify at the top usually stay there until the checkered flag. Four tire stops will likely be the preferred choice on Friday night as cornering grip ensures drivers can progress through traffic. There have been fewer than 10 lead changes in the last two races. Booking periods give teams a chance to make adjustments if they fall behind early, but long green flag runs could put those missing the target behind very quickly.

With two wins already this season, Zane Smith should be considered one of the favorites for the championship. However, he will have to overcome a slack. In the last four races his best finish was 20th at Gateway. Nashville could be the marksman he needs to get back to top speed and he will have worked with the team at the break to overcome recent challenges. Smith finished second in this race last season by 70 laps and finished fourth in 2021. Matt DiBenedetto comes into play this weekend to solidify his playoff position. He’s currently in 10th place and still looking for his first win in a row. He qualified eighth last season at Nashville but dropped out of the race and finished 31st. Another winless driver in the playoff chase is Matt Crafton. He was part of the first series race at this track and had nine top 10 finishes in 15 starts at the track. He finished 10th at last year’s race and has not finished below 11th on the oval since 2005. In contrast, Nick Sanchez has no Nashville experience. He just finished fifth in the top 10 of the season last time out at Gateway and is targeting his third straight finish this week. Fantasy players should expect him to be one of the top 10 contenders again. Tanner Gray lurks just outside the playoff spots in the standings. Like Sanchez, he has five top 10 finishes so far this season. However, he also wants to end the recent slump. His best finish in the last three races was 18th at North Wilkesboro. Gray has competed in both recent races in Nashville and achieved his best finish of 18th at the 2021 edition. Another driver looking to overcome a slump is Hailie Deegan. Hopes were high that joining ThorSport Racing in 2023 would improve her results in the series, but a series of bad luck held her back. She travels to Nashville with a top 10 finish 16th on points. She is targeting her first top 20 finish in Nashville this week.
