A local roofing company exercised some kindness and goodwill to a customer in Bunn who needed a new roof by replacing her roof free of charge.

Housetop Roofing, which is based in Raleigh and has been active for many years in Wake Forest, was contracted to the job by Ms. Perry, of Bunn. Ms. Perry elected not to have her first name disclosed in this story to preserve her privacy.

She formed a quick relationship with Robert Williams, the president of the company, who saw in Ms. Perry both a neighbor and someone who needed a little bit of help. Williams grew up in Wake Forest, and recognized from his own experiences that when money is tight, sometimes vital things like a sturdy roof get pushed to the side so that more pressing matters get dealt with.

Williams said she reminded him of his grandmother, and when she said that she wasn’t sure if she could afford the fix, his mind went toward ways he might be able to help her.

“It’s something we’ve done before for folks who might need it, and I was glad to do it because she’s a real nice lady and this is a way we can really help her out,” Williams said.

The job itself cost $6,750. It involved replacing the entire set of existing shingles and replacing them with new ones. They also replaced 80% of the rotten wood beneath the shingles.

Williams turned to a local shingle supplier to help provide the materials. They agreed to provide the necessary supplies for free after hearing Williams’ account of the customer they were intended for.

“They said it would be all right once I told them a little bit about Ms. Perry and how much it would help her out,” he said.

Williams says that over the last 15 years he’s discounted customers about $87,000 across dozens of jobs. Most were strangers to him before they contracted him and his company to do their roof or siding, but he enjoys the community-centered nature of his work, and he’s glad to help out where he can.

“I truly try to make friends when we start a new job,” he said. “This is the community that raised me up so I’m always looking for places where we might be able to do some good.

Perry was overjoyed when Williams revealed to her his plan to do the roof for free. And even though it was unexpected, she says it was appreciated, and will go a long way toward ensuring her peace of mind.

“I was just grateful to him and glad to have a new roof,” she said.
