The A.B. Won Pat International Airport Authority, Guam was awarded $21.4 million in Federal Aviation Administration competitive grant funding toward replacing its terminal roofing system with a modern, energy-efficient one, the airport said in a press release on Tuesday.

Under this FAA airport terminal program grant, the cost split for the terminal roofing project is 95% from federal funds, and 5% from the Guam International Airport Authority’s capital improvement funds.

Grant funding was awarded under the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law Airport Terminal Program.

“In a nationwide competition for funds, the timing of this award could not have come at a more opportune time as we look to propel terminal infrastructure projects forward and improve the airport’s resiliency, especially in the wake of Typhoon Mawar,” acting Airport Executive Manager Artemio “Ricky” Hernandez said in a statement.

Hernandez said the terminal roof project, as well as the terminal floor resurfacing, are currently the airport’s top capital improvement priorities.

The terminal roofing system is a transformative project that is focused on installing a modern, energy-efficient roofing system integrated with renewable energy solutions such as solar panels, the airport said.

It added that the initiative aims to enhance GIAA’s resilience to extreme weather events, ensuring uninterrupted operations and passenger safety while providing a safe and secure facility that meets Guam Building Codes.

The $21.4 million awarded to GIAA was part of the larger $970 million in grant funding awarded under the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law Airport Terminal Program funds awarded to 114 airports across the U.S., spanning 44 states and three territories announced by the FAA last week.

The ATP is one of the aviation grant programs created by the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, which is intended to provide a historic $25 billion over a five-year period to modernize American airport infrastructure.

“Our airport is vital for economic growth—connecting Guam and Micronesia to the world. We extend our deepest appreciation to the FAA for continuing to support the enhancement of our facilities, improvement of our passengers’ experiences, and resiliency of our response to natural disasters,” GIAA’s Hernandez said. “This investment—incorporating renewable energy and sustainability solutions—ensures our airport continues to be safe, efficient, and prepared for the future.”
