SISTER BAY (WLUK) – It’s not uncommon for tourists to have their heads lifted in Sister Bay, Door County. You are actually looking at the goats on the roof of Al Johnson’s Swedish Restaurant. The goats have been grazing on the grass roof for decades. But in recent years, the goats have held their own parade and festival to kick off the summer season. The 9th Roofing of the Goats Parade begins on Saturday 10 June 2023 at 11am.

Co-owner Lars Johnson explained that while this is technically the first day the goats regularly climb the roof, they did some practice runs earlier in the year in good weather.

The parade starts at the corner of Mill Road and they drive down Highway 42, past the restaurant to the main parking lot and then up onto the roof. Everyone is encouraged to dress in their favorite goat attire. Immediately following the parade is the Goat Fest, which features live music, a meeting with goats, goat crafts for kids, blowing bubbles and balloon animals, a Swedish pancake-eating contest and a beer mug-lifting contest in the Stabbur beer garden

Johnson says they’re also using the parade to raise money for local food dispensaries by selling Goat Plop stickers. People buy biodegradable stickers to put up on the street in the drop zone, and when the goat splats on the first four stickers, they win great prizes
