One of the biggest problems faced by Sekondi Market traders is the market’s cover.

They said the bad roofs affected their business, especially on rainy days.

After realizing the problem hampering the growth of these market women’s businesses, Deputy Secretary of Energy Andrew Egyapa Mercer came to their aid.

According to lawmakers, he used his social investment fund to repair the market’s canopy after it was brought to his attention.

Speaking on Connect FM’s Omanbapa morning show, Andrew Egyapa Mercer said: “The dealers will confirm the fact that the roof covering has been poor in the past and I used my resources to try and fix the problem when the NDC PC was nowhere to be found was.”

“When I realized again that the roof was in bad shape, I spoke to the MCE and they promised to mobilize resources to fix it as they charge tolls to dealers, but it turns out they don’t have over resources for repair had It. So I had to use my social investment fund to fix the roofing,” he explained.

Information on the Social Investment Fund website reviewed by GhanaWeb indicates that the fund was established in 1998 under Companies Code 1963 (ACT 179) by the Government of Ghana (GoG), the African Development Bank (AfDB) and the United Nations Development Programme was (UNDP).

The Fund was established as a fast, reliable and flexible resource channeling mechanism to provide targeted assistance to Ghana’s impoverished urban and rural communities.

Meanwhile, the deputy energy minister noted that the reconstruction of the Sekondi market is in the pipeline.

“Position No. 33 on the approved list of public investment projects in 2022-2024 captures the Sekondi market in the medium term. Therefore, it was expected that the Sekondi market would be rebuilt during this period, which would make it difficult for the metro congregation not to spend money on it,” he said.
