LOWER FREDERICK TWP., Pa. — 90 degree sweltering heat isn’t the day you want to replace someone’s roof.

But on this day, Thomas Laub doesn’t mind at all.

“This is my favorite day of the year,” said Laub. “I’m looking forward to this day.”

Laub is part of the team at Mast Roofing and Construction Inc. Each year, with the help of the community, the company donates a new roof to someone in need.

This year, that person is Michele Robinson

“My laugh muscles hurt and tears come and go. I’ve needed this roof for a long time,” said Robinson.

Robinson lost her husband in 2019. It happened to be a roofer who was planning to replace the roof himself. Cancer had other plans.

“He got cancer and couldn’t fix the roof. We took out a home equity loan to get the roof and the cancer treatments ate that up,” Robinson explained. “He went to heaven and I have a question, ‘Okay, I need a new roof.'”

She put money aside, but the money was then spent on new heating and a new water system after a winter storm cut power for two days and destroyed the systems.

“So I was back to square one.”

She believes it would have taken four years to save up for the roof.

A friend noticed an advertisement for the roof raffle and contacted Robinson. Luckily she won, and not a moment too soon.

“While it was raining, water poured down. The water ran down the wall and into the attic,” said Robinson.

Thanks to tears of joy and lots of sweat, Robinson now has a new roof.

“If I had every word in the dictionary that I could arrange in every way I could think of, I wouldn’t be able to piece together the meaning. I just couldn’t do it,” she added.
