The A.B. Won Pat International Airport has secured a $21.4 million grant to fund the replacement of its terminal roofing system, the airport announced recently in a press release.

The airport competed against 113 other airports for a portion of the $970 billion grant from the Federal Aviation Administration awarded under the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law Airport Terminal Program.

“In a nationwide competition for funds, the timing of this award could not have come at a more opportune time as we look to propel terminal infrastructure projects forward and improve the airport’s resiliency, especially in the wake of Typhoon Mawar,” Artemio Hernandez, acting executive manager of the Guam International Airport Authority, said in the release.

The ATP is one of the aviation grant programs created by the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, which is intended to provide a historic $25 billion over a five-year period to modernize U.S. airport infrastructure, the local airport said in the release.

Hernandez said, “This investment, incorporating renewable energy and sustainability solutions, ensures our airport continues to be safe, efficient and prepared for the future.”

Replacement of the terminal roof and the terminal floor resurfacing projects are at the top of the airport’s capital improvement priorities, according to Hernandez.

The terminal roofing system project involves a solar panel concept which will provide the airport with 1.6 megawatts of renewable energy, according to the release.

“The initiative aims to enhance the GIAA’s resiliency to extreme weather events, ensuring uninterrupted operations and passenger safety while providing a safe and secure facility that meets Guam building codes. Under this FAA ATP grant, the cost split for the terminal roofing project is 95% from federal funds and 5% from GIAA capital improvement funds,” the airport authority said in the release.
