A small business from Langley had a successful participation in its first community clean-up march for Earth Day.

Christine Turley, co-owner of Murrayville Plumbing, along with her husband Spencer, organized the event to give back to Copper 4 Kids and raise awareness of plastic waste in the community.

“One of our core models in our business is to keep it clean, leave it better and give everything we’ve done today,” Turley said.

About 20 to 30 volunteers were divided into three teams and sent on different routes around McDonalds on Fraser Highway and 216th Street.

“It’s Earth Day, so there’s a better day for it.”

Year 11 Langley students Evan Buchanan and Cayden Bell of Aldergrove Community Secondary came out to clean up as part of their school advocacy project.

“The goal of the project is to choose a social justice issue and create a plan that will help spread the word. We looked at the Aldergrove Star and realized there was a walk there and thought it would be a good idea to promote it,” Buchanan said.

Students made announcements at their school and handed out flyers to encourage the community to come out.

Buchanan said a clean environment has always been important to him and hates seeing litter on campgrounds or hiking trails.

“We just hope people realize this is an issue they need to take care of and as long as we can get that much done in our community I think that’s the best we can do.”

McDonald’s provided coffee for the volunteers and Turley brought surgical gloves to safely collect waste and ponchos for the predicted rain. Leftover coffee was donated to nurses at Langley Memorial Hospital.

“If everything we do has a way of giving back, then we want to give back. Even if it’s just about raising community awareness, we want to do that.”

The collected garbage and recycling waste was sorted into bags and picked up by Murrayville Plumbing Trucks.

The bags of rubbish are placed in the company’s dumpster, and recyclable bottles or cans are sorted into a bottle depot – profits go to Turley’s Copper 4 Kids charity.

The cleanup will be an annual event hosted by Murrayville Plumbing, Turley added.

“We love Murrayville, we love being a part of the community.”

Turley said anyone with suggestions for other events can contact her by calling 778-888-6451 or emailing reception@mvpbc.ca.
