A furious groom has sacked his brother from his plumbing company after the younger sibling ‘ruined’ his wedding day by proposing to his girlfriend during his best man’s toast.

The business owner, who shared his story on Reddit, hired his brother three years ago after the coronavirus pandemic left him jobless.

He alleged that their working arrangement had been going well until his brother ‘stole the shine’ and ‘ruined’ his wedding with the surprise proposal.

‘Me and my wife were appalled,’ the groom stated, adding that he ‘decided to fire him the very next day’ because he couldn’t ‘imagine seeing him every day at work’.

He claims his brother, who will be receiving severance pay, ‘doesn’t understand’ why his employment was terminated and thinks the groom is being ‘selfish and irrational’.

The Reddit user said he hired his brother, then 22, during the pandemic to help ‘get him on his feet again’.

He claims that the pair had ‘no malice’ prior to the incident at the wedding and is even excited that his brother now wants to become a master plumber and ‘start his own business’.

But he doesn’t think he will be able to get over his brother taking the attention away from him and his bride on their special day.

‘At my wedding, in which he was the best man, he decided that during his speech he would give us all a big surprise and decided to propose to his long time girlfriend,’ he explained.

‘Me and my wife were appalled. We both feel like he stole the shine from our day. Everyone else in our families were so excited and kept taking pictures with her, looking at the ring, etc.’

He claims that both his brother and parents think he overreacted to the situation by sacking his younger sibling.

‘They’re saying that “business should be separate from our personal lives”, but I just can’t overlook what he did and how he ruined our day. Am I overthinking this?’ he questioned.

‘He is still my brother, and I wouldn’t let him lose his home over this. But as a small business I can’t imagine seeing him every day at work. Not now at least.’

The groom, who was met with mixed response from fellow Reddit users, added: ‘I love all of the people who say “you’ve been looking for a reason to fire him” or “you’re just jealous.”

‘He was my best man. I never felt upset about him opening his own business. In fact, he has my complete blessing.

‘This job was only supposed to be to get him on his feet again. I’m so happy he liked the field and wants to go further in it. There was no malice before this incident.’

While most users agreed that it was ‘tacky’ of his brother to propose during the wedding reception, many believed terminating his employment was an ‘uncalled for overreaction’.

The groom hit back, alleging his brother’s actions at the wedding demonstrated a lack of ‘maturity’, which is why he fired him.

He added: ‘I wouldn’t speak poorly if a potential employer asked me about him. I would be honest about his work. But what he did shows me a lack of maturity and has caused me to lack in trust. Not good qualities for an employee.

‘I get it was “off the clock”, but you can’t insult your boss off the clock and expect to have no consequences. We are a small business (five employees, now four) and I oversee everyone. He will be able to find work elsewhere in the area.’
