CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) – Thunderstorms swept across western Massachusetts on Wednesday and some of these storms produced violent lightning, causing some damage.

Holyoke Fire called for a fire that may have been caused by a lightning strike

Every year dozens of people die as a result of a lightning strike. That’s why it’s important to know what to do when a thunderstorm approaches your location.

  • You want to take shelter in a fully enclosed building and stay away from windows.
  • Do not use a corded phone, you can use a cordless phone or a cellular phone.
  • Do not shower or bathe, the lines can conduct electricity.
  • If you are outside, do not seek shelter under a tree. If lightning strikes the tree, it can penetrate you through the tree.
  • Stay out of the water, you don’t want to be in a pool or lake.

Always remember, when the thunder rumbles, go indoors.
