It’s no secret that the 70’s are back. From wicker furniture to disco balls to maximalist designs, homeowners are increasingly taking inspiration from the fun and eclectic designs of the 1970s. One of the latest 1970s-inspired trends in the interior design world is the return of colorful plumbing fixtures like toilets, bathtubs and sinks. In fact, Kohler recently announced the return of two of its most popular archival colors – Spring Green and Peachblow – which will make their official debut in Summer 2023.

What’s behind the return of colorful plumbing?

What’s old is new again in interior design, so it stands to reason that one day we’ll see the return of colorful plumbing fixtures. After decades of whitewashed interiors, homeowners are turning to color in their homes in a variety of ways.

“The comeback of colorful porcelain sanitary fittings is part of a larger trend towards bolder and more expressive interior design,” says Billy Ceglia of Billy Ceglia Designs. “As people spend more time at home, they’re looking for ways to add personality and character to their spaces, and colorful plumbing fixtures offer just the way to do that.”

Additionally, we are seeing more and more homeowners using interior design to spruce up traditionally used spaces in the home like bathrooms, kitchens and even laundry rooms.

“We continue to see the bathroom evolving into a space of expression where homeowners are willing to take a little more risk,” says Alyssa Wilterdink, senior marketing manager at Kohler. “Reinvigorating interior spaces through color can create a sophisticated juxtaposition that is familiar and harmonious, yet surprising and appealing.”

A modern interpretation of a nostalgic style

Colorful plumbing fixtures may be back in fashion, but in 2023 they look very different than they did a few decades ago. What makes this trend different this time? In short, manufacturers are offering more colors and designs than ever before, with sleek and modern styles and hues.

“The reissues of vintage plumbing from Kohler and other brands feature sleeker shapes, minimalist lines and modern finishes that create a fresh take on ’70s style,” says Alessia Lamonaca, owner and chief designer at New Mode Home. For homeowners looking for something specific to add to their home, personalization is also easily available.

How to style colorful plumbing fixtures

Adding a colorful sink, toilet or bathtub to your home is a big investment. So it’s a good idea to think carefully about how you want to create this type of decor in your home before taking the plunge. Here are a few expert-approved tips for adding colorful plumbing to your home.

Choose the right room

If this is your first time experimenting with colorful faucets and you’re unsure about making the switch in your master bathroom, consider trying it in a smaller, less significant room of the house first.

“I’d recommend using it in kids’ bathrooms, a powder room near your entertainment area/bar, poolside bathrooms, or even powder rooms — places that you might not spend a lot of time in but offer a great opportunity to do some fun,” says Maren Baker by Maren Baker Design.

Go for muted tones

Colorful plumbing fixtures are now available in a range of different colors, from pastels to bold jewel tones and everything in between. To keep your space from looking dated, Lamonaca recommends opting for “colorful furnishings in more muted tones like pastel blues, greens, and pinks.” [rather] than light, bold tones.” This makes the design look fresh and modern rather than kitschy and overdone.

Wear color throughout the room

“When you choose a bold color for a piece of furniture, it’s important to complement it with other elements in the room: wallpaper, paint or tiles,” says Rosanna Bassford, founder and principal designer of Eggshell Home.

This contributes to the fact that the lamp looks wanted and well thought out and not just trendy and isolated in the room. Consider bringing color through the room by using accessories like artwork, hardware, linens (e.g. bath towels, shower curtains, floor mats, etc.) and other decorations, as well as more permanent options like wall paint and tile.

Bring balance with neutral tones

Be sure to incorporate some neutral tones into the room to complement a colorful decor and add some balance. For example, choose a neutral wall color, countertops or flooring, advises Lamonaca. “This creates a harmonious and balanced look that still makes a statement,” she says.

Combine it with timeless materials

To keep colorful plumbing fixtures from looking dated, it’s always a good idea to pair them with timeless materials like wood, tile, and marble, advises Ceglia. The idea is to combine a potentially on-trend piece with classic materials that help keep the design stylish and relevant no matter the year.

Is colorful plumbing a passing fad?

Designers seem to agree that, like the colorful plumbing trends of the mid to late 20th century, it’s probably only a matter of time before colorful faucets go out of style again. But that doesn’t mean this trend isn’t worth trying if you’re looking to add a fun pop of color to your space. Furthermore, if we learned something about trends, colorful plumbing fixtures will be back in fashion in the near future anyway.

“As with any trend, it’s important to consider your personal style and preferences before incorporating it into your home,” says Ceglia. “If you love the look of colorful plumbing fixtures and can see yourself living with them for years to come, then go for them! If you are unsure, start small with accessories or smaller furnishings first before making a larger commitment.”
