Students able to return to class after plumbing restored at four Alleghany Highlands schools

UPDATE: 3/14 ALLEGHANY, Va. (WFXR) — After two days of classes being canceled due to plumbing issues, the Alleghany Highlands Public Schools (AHPS)says Alleghany High School, Jackson River Technical Center, Clifton Academy, and Covington Middle School will reopen on Friday, March 15.

The district says staff and Covington’s Public Works Department, were able to clear a blockage in the sewage line on Thursday morning.

“We are appreciative of all our community partners, including our local government partners across the Alleghany Highlands, for their assistance and encouragement in so many ways,” said Kim Halterman and Melinda Snead-Johnson, leaders of AHPS.

ALLEGHANY, Va. (WFXR) — The Alleghany Highlands Public Schools (AHPS) says four of its schools will remain closed on March 14 due to ongoing sewage issues.

The district says Alleghany High School, Jackson River Technical Center, Clifton Academy, and Covington Middle School will be closed on Thursday as maintenance crews continue to make repairs. This marks the second consecutive day classes were canceled due to sewer problems.

According to school officials, an unexpected plumbing problem occurred on March 12, and since then, maintenance crews have been working diligently to resolve the issue.

AHPS says all elementary schools will open on Thursday; however, Alleghany High School, Jackson River Technical Center, Clifton Academy, and Covington Middle School will remain closed to avoid confusion over an overlap of students and transportation.
