CENTRALIA — Centralia Correctional Center was placed on a Level 2 lockdown this week after a series of plumbing issues caused much of the facility to have its water shut down.

According to IDOC the water was shut down Tuesday evening following the discovery of a water line break and after the line was repaired water was restored.

However, after the restoration of water, plumbing issues began surfacing in the housing units of East 1, East 3, East 4, East 5, South 2, and South 4.

Then on Wednesday morning, the facility was placed on Level 2 lockdown when two housing units, East 3 and East 5, began experiencing water backing up in the cells.

Naomi Puzzello, Public Information Officer for IDOC says individuals in these locations were immediately relocated to another area of the facility temporarily while maintenance staff worked diligently to resolve the issue and mitigate operational disruptions. And on Wednesday an outside plumbing service completed a high-pressure flush of the main water line.

Prison staff was conducting a final assessment of each toilet inside the facility Thursday to ensure all a functioning properly, that there are no areas where sewer is backing up, that all sewer lines are clear, and that the facility’s sewer plant is functioning as designed.

The prison will remain on Level 2 lockdown status until IDOC can confirm that all toilets are functioning properly.

Individuals are being provided bottled water. In addition, water is boiled, then once cooled, placed in 5-gallon water coolers in all areas of the facility for individuals in custody and staff needs until water tests come back clear.
