MCLEAN, Va., July 11, 2023–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Plumbing Manufacturers International’s 2023 annual report, titled “Upstream, Downstream,” showcases how plumbing manufacturers and related industries are contributing to solutions across the water value chain to improve access to to ensure safe and clean water for future generations. A short video summarizes the report.

The report includes contributions from all 37 PMI members, highlighting their achievements in water efficiency, hygiene, hand hygiene, sustainability, green building and more. The report also explains how PMI highlights these innovations when representing the interests of its members in technical, regulatory and legislative forums on issues such as water efficiency standards, tariffs, protection against counterfeiting and extended producer responsibility. By creating value through working with policy makers, PMI helps its members continue to thrive in a fair and open marketplace.

In letters preceding the report, PMI CEOs Sal Gattone and Martin Knieps, and PMI CEO and Managing Director Kerry Stackpole encourage sanitation and water industry stakeholders to think holistically about water resources and engage with policymakers to to develop synergistic solutions for the entire water value chain.

“Water scarcity around the world will come with increasing expectations for us and other stakeholders along the water value chain to reduce water use,” explain Gattone and Knieps. “However, as we rise to this challenge, we must approach it holistically by focusing the attention of policymakers on the entire water value chain, both upstream and downstream of where our products reside in residential, commercial and public buildings condition.”

While Stackpole’s letter summarizes PMI’s latest achievements, he also renews the ongoing discussion among members about where the manufacturing industry can currently have the greatest impact on the environment.

The story goes on

“The PMI Board has been looking at this issue extensively over the past year,” Stackpole said. “After much discussion, the Board decided to focus on how PMI and its members can contribute to sustainable water stewardship through our Rethink Water initiative as climate change and other factors lead to water scarcity.”

Rethink Water promotes systemic solutions and accelerated innovation

Creating a proactive water conservation scenario through PMI’s Rethink Water initiative requires industry leaders to drive a comprehensive and collaborative approach to water sustainability in collaboration with government and various other stakeholders. This public-private partnership can propel a large-scale operation to achieve sustainable water stewardship, drive innovation and bring a huge influx of jobs and manufacturing capacity back to the United States, the report said.

The report emphasizes how dwindling water resources can be conserved through the implementation of systemic solutions and accelerated innovation. For example, replacing older products can quickly save significant amounts of water. Plumbing manufacturers have a long history of developing water efficient, safe and durable products. The latest toilets, showerheads, faucets and other fixtures build on that history to achieve even greater water savings, convenience and environmental responsibility while delivering the safe and clean refreshment so important to health.

To solve seemingly insurmountable water and sanitation problems, the sanitation industry must take small steps. “The first of those steps is simply to talk about the problem. These discussions lead to action, first on a small scale, then on a larger scale as the trend towards better water and sanitation solutions progresses,” the report says.

The report summarizes PMI’s recent achievements

The report also summarizes PMI’s recent achievements, including:

  • With calls for expanded producer responsibility legislation rising in several states, PMI has partnered with the packaging industry’s leading advocates – the American Institute for Packaging and the Environment (AMERIPEN) – to ensure PMI members from beyond the horizon Insights into new laws and compliance benefit plans on the drawing board.

  • Because counterfeit plumbing products entered the US market through online outlets, PMI filed complaints with the Department of Energy, the Department of Customs and Border Protection, the Department of Homeland Security, and the owners of various online marketplaces, including Amazon. PMI also supported the recently passed Integrity, Notification, and Fairness in Online Retail Marketplaces (INFORM) consumer law to fill the gaps in online marketplace accountability.

  • PMI renewed industry opposition to tariffs on Chinese goods in comments to the US Trade Representative and Secretary of Commerce. PMI continues to provide regular updates on tariff issues that first emerged in 2019.
